Liszt Bicentenary

Creative Director Cecil Lytle reflects on the importance of Franz Liszt and celebrating his bicentenary.

2011 is the occasion of the 200th birthday of one of the most enigmatic and influential artists of the 19th century, Franz Liszt (1811-1886). Love and hated throughout most of his life, Liszt knew, shaped, and supported every emerging arts and political movement of his era. By the age of nine, young Franz Liszt was praised about across Europe as the second Mozart. However, not content with the fleeting fame of the prodigy, he sequestered himself to develop upon the foundational training he received from the greatest piano pedagogue in Europe. Carl Czerny. During a long ten-year pilgrimage across Europe, he developed what he called a “transcendental technique’ for playing the piano. Consequently, he composed and performed a piano music that reinvented conventional pianism as well as the physical and kinetic relation of the body to the piano. In his compositions and performances, no longer would music be simply two dimensional (melody and accompaniment) but enhanced to incorporate 3 or 4 dimensions of activity at the piano. His celebrated Paganini Etudes (1851) and Transcendental Etudes (1852) soon became the mainstay of the piano repertoire and altered the way other composed music for the piano.

Biography: Lynn Burnstan, Managing Director, UCTV

A documentary filmmaker by training, Lynn Burnstan is the Managing Director of UCSD-TV and UCTV. In 1993, she joined the UCSD-TV team and began creating a unique television station that provides the San Diego area with locally produced, regionally focused programming on a wide variety of topics. In 2000, Lynn was chosen to manage UCTV, a satellite television and web channel that features programs from throughout the University of California system. Together the stations serve a local, national and global audience with thought provoking television unlike anything else.

Before joining UCSD, Lynn produced and edited award-winning films in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and San Diego for television, film festivals, corporations and commercials. A long time resident of California, she has a B.A. in Communications and Visual Arts from UCSD, and she received her Masters of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Biography: Kenneth D. Kebow, Director

Ken Kebow has been producing and directing broadcast and cable television programming, as well as corporate communication programming, for over twenty years. A native of San Diego, Kebow has an impressive list of corporate clients, as well as a number of nationally recognized awards and nationwide airings of his programs.

Kebow has worked with a number of national broadcast clients including:

• CBS Affiliates
• CBS Sports
• NBC Affiliates
• ABC Affiliates
• ESPN
• PBS Affiliates (over fifty stations)

His most recent documentary, “Conflict, Unity and Love: The TKF Story” was honored with a 2008 Emmy Award for Excellence in Documentary Programming and has aired more than 150 times on over 50 PBS stations across the United States. The program was also one of three finalists in the 2010 Fallbrook Film Festival. Other documentary projects include “Blastoff!”, a program that takes children on a journey through the history of America’s Space Program (Parent’s Choice Award winner and distributed by Hallmark Kids Entertainment) and “The Art of Surfing”, which aired on KPBS and was awarded with a Silver Telly Award for Excellence in Documentary Programming (the most prestigious Telly awarded) and was awarded Best Short Documentary in
the 2010 Fallbrook Film Festival.
